1ª Entrevista

MARTINA CLARKE

'Insomniac' 40x40 oils on canvas

This girl is pure art. Martina who is sixteen years old, is an australian artist who has granted me the pleasure to interview her.
Martina is young but she has been painting since she could hold chalk, which is notable. Says that around people and in uncomfortable situations she can do her best art, maybe that's why she idolizes Marina Abramović.
Fresh mind and very good ideas. You can check it at her instagram: artistic-scum.

1When did you start drawing and painting?
From as soon as I could hold chalk!  a very young age.

2What materials you normally use?
My favourite is Oil paint on canvas but I also sketch a lot in graphite.

3Do you want to be a professional artist?
Yes, it'll be hard but its worth it.

4Do you need inspiration to paint?
In a way. I find inspiration in people, so i can almost make art anywhere, especially in busy places.

5Do you have idols, women, art related? Who?
I would consider Marina Abramovic as one of my idols. Her approach on the performing arts through exploring the limitations of the body and possibilities of the mind are profound for me, and something i would love to challenge one day myself. What i love most about her work is the level of involvement the audience has in it.

6What do you use to get inspired?
I use people, new landscapes and surroundings, putting myself in uncomfortable positions. Anything that will refresh my mind.

7Do you feel the need to paint? When?
Not exactly to paint, but more to make art. I use my work to come to terms with myself, this usually happens after I've had a drastic experience of some sort whether it be positive or negative. If you notice, a lot of subject in my paintings or drawings are myself. It can sound pretty selfish but it is most important for me to understand myself. Painting without emotion to drive it, ends up just being a skill.

8Do you have a blog or site where you upload your creations?
Mostly Instagram (artistic_scum)

9Do you think that women artists have faced sexist attitudes through out history?
Yes. Women have always been used as props in all art movements throughout history, in every fashion possible. Where it be in painting, they would be models, and when women would write novels they would sometimes have to be published under a false, male name. Only with the turning of the century (after many rallies of liberal feminism) have we shaken most of these sexist attitudes in the western world.
